The time comes when everything just needs a stop and everybody just needs a break. And that should and must apply to students including those giving the board examinations.
The facility infact the privilege of online classes has not been accessible to everyone showcasing the lack of infrastructure, technology, internet and electricity facilities.
So this effectively means that a student’s right to education has definitely been hampered. And that is a concern we must address at all levels.
Because while I can download wordpress in my phone and type my blogs, a student sitting somewhere not even know what is happening in school.
But today I want to again address the question regarding the mental health of the student community. The Pandemic has not been easy, has not been light for anyone . And the effects of the Pandemic are different for everyone which can definitely depend on your financial and social background.
But again today I would like to talk about the health concerns of students. India is not a country which takes it light on children appearing for examinations . I would not comment on the New Education policy till its effective implementation.
But till now, education has not placed emphasis on knowledge. It has placed a lot of importance on marks and basically competitive examinations and jobs. Those again taking special coaching, Kudos for dealing with it all.
While people are talking with continuing virtual learning systems after the Pandemic, I disagree. Till the Pandemic, I can’t say anything . We have no choice. But after we get the choice(hopefully soon), I can’t seem to agree with this whole concept of virtual learning. Yes we can definitely upgrade the virtual mode for those indulging in distant education or any other programmes and need such a mode of learning.
But this shouldn’t replace the real classroom as a learning environment for everyone. Being in the moment and absorbing everything there is important. Chit chatting with friends, sharing your lunch and even giving that hand raise is important. It is. I have had it on raising hands on zoom and teams.
The pressure on students is something disregarded in our country. With the 90 plus and 30 minus demarcation, it has never been easy . Like I remember having half a mark cut in a 80 mark test and being kind of snubbed my my teacher . And I was hurt and most importantly confused. Like why? It’s half a mark. Okay we can all strive to do our best and try to get good marks if we can. But again why do we need to be like the Virus? Can’t we be like the Rancho?
It’s been 1 year since class 10. My pre board results came which were touchwood fine. And the next day I am studying for my boards just thinking why am I doing this? For me obviously having access to laptops and stuff, The syllabus was over way back and I have been giving tests on tests. So now when I pick up a book, I am like mentally exhausted. I don’t wanna study. And it’s not some cribbing or oh you are exaggerating.
It’s real. This exhaustion. Some people call us lucky for 30 percent syllabus reduction. Even if we keep the ones who didn’t get suitable access to education aside, like the children for whom syllabus reduction was most important, it was necessary for even a student like me.
It’s not easy having no face to face interaction with teachers. And having the pressure of boards riled up with an ongoing Pandemic and just so much student pressure.
It was necessary. Period. It’s actually not a privilege. Difficult times call for necessary arrangements. Are these arrangements privileges? No. A big fat no. They are just important provisions we need to deal with the obstacles.
We have a Pandemic and we have to appear in boards next month. More than 1 lakh cases . And we have to appear for examinations.
Isn’t it normal to feel pressurized, stressed and exhausted? I believe that a lot of this pressure and tiredness to deal with it all would exist even in no Pandemic situations.
For everyone. From a nursery to class 12th student. From those giving competitive examinations to those doing PHDs. Everyone. It might differ as per the level but it is there.
Imagine a child who is learning ABCD is doing it through an IPAD. Yah parents are there. But again atleast what you learn in a school is being told on a computer. 1+1=2- learn on a phone.
Today the student community is trending #CancelBoardExaminations. Even if some students might not do it only for the fear of the Pandemic, I am sorry I can’t say it wrong.
Mental health is something important. Cant say it in simpler words. Can’t denote its importance more.
Is it always so important to judge students by the no. of hours they study? Can you understand the number of hours they sit with their heads held in their hands and just cry? Might not hold true for everyone. But it’s something I am definitely doing.
I seriously hope what is being passed to us today as phases, weaknesses and scoldings stops. I wish we as students grow up and fight this as adults. And keep on fighting today.
While CMs are commenting on ripped jeans, let’s just stop commenting for once. And let’s just decide to grow . As individuals and as humans.
Let’s stop defining struggles by our standards.
Let’s stop pressuring.
Let’s stop setting bench marks.
And at the end,
Let’s take a break.
Cause sometimes all you need is one.
